Our Oath
We swear to fulfill, to the best of our ability and judgment, this covenant:
We will apply, for the benefit of those in need, all measures that are required, putting the needs of our clients above our own and always understanding that it is not only our moral duty to do such, but our professional responsibility.
We will remember that there is art to planning as well as science; and that warmth, sympathy, and understanding may outweigh the computer illustration or the financial chart.
We will not be ashamed to say “We know not,” nor will we fail to call in our colleagues when the skills of another are needed for a client's well being.
We will respect the privacy of our clients, for their problems are not disclosed to us that the world may know. Most especially, we must tread with care in matters of life and death. If it is given to us to financially provide for a life, all thanks. But it may also be within our power to financially hurt a life; this awesome responsibility must be faced with great humbleness and awareness of our own frailty. Above all, we must not play at God.
We will remember that we do not treat a financial loss statement, an inadequate insurance portfolio, or an underperforming investment, but a human being in need of help, whose problem may affect the person's family, health and overall economic stability. Our responsibility includes these related problems, if we are to care adequately for those in need of help.
We will help those we care for to avoid loss whenever we can, for prevention is preferable over cure.
We will remember that we remain a member of society, with special obligations to all our fellow human beings, those of sound mind and body, as well as the infirm.
If we do not violate this oath, may we enjoy life and art, be respected while we live, and remembered with affection thereafter. May we always act so as to preserve the finest traditions of our calling and may we long experience the joy of advising those who seek our help.
